The Social Network

Surprisingly, Social Network the Movie didn't affect me much based on Facebook use. I heard many that have seen the movie are being aware of the Facebook site. Overall rating for the movie, i would give five out of five. For both Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, they stand out a lot throughout the movie. They were both terrific actors, just that the turnout of their relationship was sad due how the story went out making those billions of dollars. It was fascinating and quite catchy since it makes you think about how fast and often the internet and networking have evolved. The scenarios of how the Winklevoss twins started "Harvard Connection" with such ambition and having creating an intense rivalry. However, in some parts of the movie, it was a bit too exaggerated, it makes me wonder if it is really based on a true story.

I was also reading this article where dozens of people stopped going on Facebook, especially the older men and women. The youngster ranging from 18-35 that goes on Facebook increased after watching the Social Network. It seems there are many negative comments about the movie itself. I, myself find the movie pretty entertaining dealing with their experience of making social network work as a success on the computer.

The Next New Thing

Internet has been taking over many people since technology is improving faster than before. Pretty much that the next new thing would be a transfer of a better communication through cellphones. Since iphones and smartphones are already on its way with webcams, they might go further and create international webcam where you can webcam with anyone around the world. What's more is there might be cellphone projectors that are on its way to a create a new generation.

In the future, we might be webcaming and see each other through a virtual image through mini projectors. Many things are unpredictable, and yet there are possibilities that it will happen. Those 3D figures of people will be seen on those projector purpose. Since 3D idea are pretty much in theaters and picture-frames, there might be a change and be added through the cellphone webcams for better quality purpose.

The idea of the next new media will be transferred through other technologies, for example through cellphones where internet exists.

Wiki So Far

As of what I am researching, I am thinking about the yearly decrease and increase drop-rate of the New Media toward the stock market. However first and for most, comparison and connection between the Social Media and the Financial Market is a must. Description of what affects the social media through the Financial Market will take some time to look through. The yearly rates are for most part dropping due to privacy, intellectual property and other such problems. Those problems will not be look through much but will be discussed for some parts because most media involves much of them. I have not yet edit it up to the Wiki yet, because I want to research a bit more into it before finalizing my parts on it.

About my term paper

I did my term paper on how social networking is better than reality. I used several examples and scenarios where social networking benefits our lives more. I used Facebook and Tweeter as examples as well. I researched references from Baruch databases and some recent news that can back up my evidence. Some references come from JSTOR, ISTE, and Google Scholars. I wrote about the cons and pros of Facebook and Tweeter on how it impacts our lives on the internet and in the real world. I chose this topic because I want to further my research and see how Facebook have helped people. I also wanted to see in what ways have it harmed people. As for Twitter, I did not know much. But after a thorough research, it actually in really helpful with job finding. However what was interesting and a major finding for me was from the article on Tweeter's limited 140 words. From one of my article, it talked about mindcasting and lifecasting. The phenomenal idea is that just chatting online can be an art that emphasizes many things. Since technology advance as social media advances, I can understand why mindcasting can be fun and challenging. According to one of my researcher Cortunix,  mindcasting is a method that uses Twitter for exchange of news, information, analysis and opinion. And lifecasting is a method that uses Twitter to make friends and communicate with them, to be in a continuous presence in a community of one's liking. It tells users that today's networking media is more challenging and aesthetic as time pass on. It also tells users that today's new media not only can help our understanding of online communication but also our daily life.

Advice to Baruch College

Many of the Baruch Media are pretty good, though it could be better. It did help many students fostering their community and know what is going on in school. For example, Blackboard did help us with our communication. Though it is a useful tool for learning, it is pretty outdated. It could be better if there are interacting chat rooms where online people can share their information. The forwarding messages are saved in there for their next visits. It should show who is online and who is not. Since many students use twitters, blogs, Facebook and etc, it could be better if it is linked to blackboard right away through linking system. Even professors might have a better way of knowing when and who posted just by going on blackboard.

Baruch networking can also try to improve the problems by having its own forum where students can discuss about their problems or school related issues. It could be helpful. Lectures, notes, projects, group work, presentation, and other issues can be discussed there. Communication might even improve. Although there are risks to take, it is worth a try.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Nowadays, many problems involve with Privacy and Confidentiality. Privacy deals with personal information and confidentiality deals with authorized information from clients or companies. Privacy on the Internet are being violated more and more due to better technology or programs. Confidentiality is getting easier to know as well due to many social networking sites that share company employees or employers.

From Internet, for example on Facebook, there are people that do not know the privacy customization in there. Their information can be seen by everyone. Since we are using world wide Internet, we don't know who will be accessing out sites. It is true that most social networking sites are improving our communication and better contacts. It is easier for us to leave messages in their site or inbox. However, there are still risks to take. If the customization of privacy is not done well, there could be people that steals your information and use it again you. If there are company sites and there are possible people that can access it, in those cases, those so-called hacker can misuse those information and sell it to another company for money or other illegal uses. Possible that an employee's image can be framed and get him/her fired as well. You never know what is next.

It is true that Internet provide us massive information. It has brought great amount of benefits to our society. It is easy and convenient to use. Communication is so much easier. though, we should still be on guard for our privacy. No one wants their privacy to be violated. As for workers, clients, customer, companies, and etc...no one want to be framed and lose their job for some misleading information.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

What are different ways these virtual worlds can be used? What are the pros and cons? Be specific. How do virtual worlds foster creativity? What do you think the future of virtual worlds will look like?

Virtual world can be used in many ways. Some parties or organizations use it for meeting purpose. Some people use it for gaming and socializing. Some use the virtual world for entertainment. Some uses it for business and money making. According to Linden Lab, businesses are easier and budgets are cut lower in this way.

The pros of virtual world is that it allows users to have easier communication, less travel and budgets. According to Linden Lab, creators of Second Life, more than 1,400 organizations use Second Life to hold meetings, conduct training and prototype new technologies more efficiently. Many organizations and businesses are trying to lower on travel and make it time consuming by using Second Life. They create extra security for safety issue. They create altered avatars of themselves and the enterprise tool allows them to do so. There are other possibility as video conferencing.

The cons of virtual world is that some information or avatars can be fake. People are anonymous online. Different behavior on the network than on reality. There are money fraud that goes around in virtual world as well. Cheating and meddling with other people’s privacy as well. Or even if the avatar are a girl or guy, we do not know if it is a girl or guy in real because it could be false.

Creativity in the virtual world varies a lot. There are old and new media, entertainment, games, colorful thoughts and ideas. For example, for an avatar of yourself, you can change your hair color. You can change your skin, height, hairstyle, eyes, mouth, and more. To be anonymous, you can use a different name. You can lie about your age and job. For example in Second Life, the creator can design different house, apartment, bars, restaurants, store, museums and etc. He can change and add in portraits on the wall. He can have it a comfortable brown or orange colors. He could also make it scary if he wants to. He can create events for example, Halloween -- He can create green wallpapers for the wall and floor. Black or white curtains on the window could be used. In Hotel Chelsea, Mr. Brown took his time and created a building in Second Life. Many avatars were entertained and interested in his work. It was undergoing a great process at first.

Nowadays, virtual world are pretty common because technology advances so fast. Everyone uses the network for entertainment, gaming, streaming, downloading and discussions. There are some cons and pros, however everyone is learning to cope with it. Reality is reality and virtual world is virtual world. Maybe in the far future, if possible, they will mix better.

Twitter Disscussion

Twitter discussion is pretty useful. There are so many different choices to make and good for job search. You can easily tag someone or follow someone, and you would be able to see and read their response.  Comments can be added or read any time. They would still be there and almost anyone can see as long as they search or browse through.

With blackboard discussion, it is only accessible by the students and professor. Not much variety of designs like the display pictures are seen on the side. Comments are not shared entirely. There are no special tags like the @ or # that gets you to be in a group chat. We can delete or re-twitter on the twitter discussion. We cannot delete response or comments on the blackboard discussion.

In a class room discussion, we are only talking to those amount of people and no one else. Only those in class and the professor can know of what is going on. We are talking physically and expressing with gestures. Twitter does not have that since it is online based. It is easier on twitter to have access with everyone and people can get the message right away. In a class discussion, the things we talk about are limited and time is also limited.

Social Networking

There are many ways that social networking technologies can be used by corporations and businesses.Marketing majors or any other types of majors use computers nowadays. Through network, there are mass amount of information and websites that we do not even know about. Some sites are not even reliable since most of them are not done professionally. Thus, many networking chats, blogs and sites like Facebook, twitter, Myspace and other similar social networking site gathers those people on the same place and discuss what they should be using.

Not only does social networking helps create better site seeing, but also it helps us communicate better. It improves globally and economically. Many organizations either profitable or non profit, they create their own networking sites, so co-workers can vary and share their experiences with each other. They tell about their stories, relates their experiences, rates the organization; so that more enthusiastic younger generations will join and build it even better. "Social networking technology is absolutely the best thing to happen to recruiting — ever." (Langfitt, Frank Social Networking) Linkedin is one of the networks out there that recruits many people for jobs.  Laspina is one of those people that got recruited and she said it was because the company reached out for her and asked her what position she wants.

The benefits of social network also helps improve our communication, because of daily chats and blogs we sent to each other. Unlike reality, whatever we post up, your friends out there will be able to see. Also since now most sites are advancing, we are able to control our privacy of letting who see. For example in Facebook, there are private chats and inbox. Through inbox, we can sent messages privately as well and the person will see the notification once he/she logs on.

The dark side of networking is that there can be loss of privacy even if there are private chats. We do not know if it is the person we are talking to. Suppose if that person's friend is on his account playing a game, or sending misinformation, or possibility hacked. We cannot physically see each other as well. A lot of misinformation going on and misleading people to virus or spyware. There are also some sites that gives spywares and we cannot make sure if every single site has either.

In my opinion, we should be extra careful when visiting foreign sites. Or I could also use yesterday's incident that the Baruch site was attacked. People visiting it could not open up the site. It also keep sending emails saying to confirm who you are and such. I heard it is already fixed, but such things like this happen more frequently now because of the advantages of those with good computer skills. There is that violation of privacy with those emails and site abuse.

Check Out Social Networking Sites

Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, and Twitter are all social networking sites that have been around for better communication. They all have chats/ communication area where people can be contacted. They are all user friendly and the help button shows and guides me to where most tools and archives are located. At the same time there are many differences. For Facebook, it is more toward individuality because most experiences are from you. You are the one sharing the stories and comments to people. MySpace has a bit more variety in term of creativity with the site. Like Facebook, it can be used for comments and stories. At the same times it can be used for collection of entertainment. Friendster gives a lot more detail information on advertising, sales, cars, news, services and more. Twitter on the other hand, shows a lot more updates with international and national news.

Of all of them, Facebook is probably the most popular one because there are more tools, archives, games and group chats. From the site, communicating with friends and other members can be done through private or public messages or a chat feature. You could also join interest or fan groups with your peer community or friends. You can control what you want to share. For example, you can block people from seeing your pictures, comments if they are not your friends. For friends of friends’ information, you could control it as if only you can see it. It is convenient for me because most of my friends are there.  Since technology has improved so much, most people have their Facebook on their phones as well, so they can easily access it anywhere where there is wireless network.

MySpace is also pretty popular compared to Facebook. However, it has better customization. You can customize and update your site anyway you want. It has all kinds of layout and function that entertains the user. You can also use small emoticons to express your moods and feelings. You can do journal entries and picture albums. You can upload music and videos onto like Facebook. It also has many more other entertainment options in there.

For Friendster, I like how it can be shown in so many different languages. When I sign in for it, it automatically asks me if I want to upload a picture. I think that step was unnecessary because the interests and hobbies matter more. But I do like the step where it adds the people from  my email automatically so that I don’t have to waste my time adding one by one. I also noticed that it has several ads on each click. It also has suggestions if I want to try any new things such as games and Medias. The media and games are actually pretty entertaining as well.
Lastly, I have seen twitter on a lot of smart phones and iPhones as well as with Facebook. I have never used it before. Now that I have an access to it, the site does not load that fast for me. Maybe I don’t have good connection. I get error sometimes. I tried again later around evening last night, I can finally access it. I like how it gives suggestions and ask if users want to do it or not. I see that there are a lot of topics revolving twitter. Some of them are Art & Design, Books, business, Charity, Deals & Discounts, entertainment, family, food & drink and etc. When I click the news area, it gives me a list of different news sites. This is really helpful because I don’t have to take my time looking and search for the ones I want. I can just tag them on my twitter.

Blogs vs. Wikis

Compare and Contrast
Blog is a personal or corporate website in the format of online journal with new entries written in a timely fashion. The updates and edits are limited to one person, making it slow. Wiki is a collaborative website where it can be directly edited by anyone with an account and password. The edits and updates of the content is rapidly fast.

Blog can only have one author, however it can have many comments being written by the visitors to the site in a orderly fashion. The content is written in form of a journal. According to Kathy E. Gill, blogs have archived entries, meaning the accessibility of the old contents still exist.
 Kathy Gill - Blogosphere

According to Erza Goodnoe,  wikis were originally conceived as an open source project in the extreme, there are those who argue that a true wiki should have no authorship restrictions.Wiki can have multiple authors editing the content, meaning the content most likely belong to the wiki not the authors. The authors are like the cooperating members of the community. Multiple opinions can be edited on wiki, yet they could appear on the wiki site or on a discussion forum.
Erza Goodnoe - Wikis

Convergence
The convergence of blogs is the passion or voice of the community as one network. It brings the community of people into one network where communication is easier with the exchange of emails and comments being posted up. It is efficient and easy to access on blogs since every entries are updated in a journal format. It is also timely consumed, since people will depend on technology more. Therefore, the convergence of blogs are a plus to those that use laptops, desktops or notebooks because they can don't waste time.

New Use of Wikis
Wikis can help students with group projects. According to Erza Goodnoe, wiki is a content management system. Documents, spreadsheets, web links and other contents allow people to create a project from wikis. Since the setup of post is pretty general, students can make a use of wikis in form of groups to make their projects since it allows external links as well. Since wikis is an open sourced website, many people can visit the project and make multiple comments or edits making wiki more reliable with the knowledge of the multiple edits.

Social Networking: Better or worse than the real thing?

For my research, I will be comparing and contrasting the visual world of communication through internet and its services towards the real world in which we communicate in. From these so called "internet chats and bloggers", many of them such as myspace, twitter and facebook have brought a great change of communication into the visual world as well as the real world. Unlike the visual world, our real world consists of a massive amount of people and transportation that we have to rely more on technology such as telephones or cellphones.  So basically I will be explaining and supporting my ideas on how social networking is better than the real thing.

Describe New Media

New Media can be described as a communication where varies people from all over the place can participate. It is a social network where people can share what is on their mind in a very convenient way. They don't need to walk several miles or waste some money to take a bus or train just to commute to their fellow friends.

There is also a popular Chinese blog that found the attention of many people out there. This blogger brings about the critical issues of certain affairs into discussion on internet. This new media helps those who are searching for news and affairs easier. Either old news or new ones, those issues are posted in the blogger where it holds massive amount of information.
